  10. Lately there have been a whole bunch of speed switch programs for the Mega STe.
  11. But I haven't seen any that stay in memory and work with hot keys.  This one
  12. does.

  17. MHz is, by itself, Freeware.  You can give it to anyone else you like, as long
  18. as:
  19.  
  20. 1)  You give them both programs and this file, both completely unaltered.
  21. 2)  You don't charge for the copy, except for reasonable charges to cover
  22.     the cost of the media (disk).  This charge should not exceed $10, or the
  23.     nearest equivalent in the local currency.

  26. -- Using the program ---------------------------------------------------------

  28. Just toss MHz.PRG in your AUTO folder and reboot your computer.  It will
  29. install itself in RAM; every time you want to switch between 16MHz with cache
  30. or 8MHz without cache, just press CTRL and RIGHT SHIFT.

  32. If you don't like the combination of CTRL and RIGHT SHIFT, then run
  33. MHz_Cfg.PRG; you'll be prompted to answer YES or NO to CTRL, LEFT SHIFT, RIGHT
  34. SHIFT, and ALTERNATE.  These make up your hot key choice.  For example, if you
  35. answer YES to CTRL and ALTERNATE, then you have to press CTRL and ALTERNATE to
  36. switch speeds.  The program will not let you use a setup that does not require
  37. at least two keys to switch the speed.

  39. Once you've selected your hot key combination, you'll be asked to locate
  40. MHz.PRG with the fileselector.  (It should be in your AUTO folder, right?)
  41. Just find it and click on "Okay".  The change won't take effect until you
  42. reboot, and the text message that says "Press CTRL + RIGHT SHIFT" isn't
  43. altered.  Maybe I'll fix that sometime...

  46. -- Known incompatibilities ---------------------------------------------------

  48. If you don't have a Mega STe, it obviously makes no sense to use this program.
  49. Therefore, the program WILL NOT CHECK to see if you're really using a Mega STe;
  50. it will happily install itself on any machine.  Trying to use it on a regular
  51. ST or STe will result in bombs and a total lockup of the computer.  Mega STe
  52. users have nothing to worry about.

  54. Other than that, I have found no problems using the program.  It _even_ works
  55. with Spectrum, which can be very picky about which programs it will work with.
  56. As a matter of fact, if you're using a Spectrum picture viewer that doesn't
  57. automatically slow down Mega STe's, you can even change speeds WHILE THE
  58. PICTURE IS BEING DISPLAYED on most viewers!  Of course, it'd be nice to have
  59. the program switch speeds FOR you... look for Spc-3375 1.6 for that feature!

  64. Naturally I'd like for you to check out some other software... so here's a
  65. few.

  67. o BoinkSave - Recently featured on the cover disk of Atari ST User, this is
  68.   a neat screen saver that displays a bouncing ball.
  69. o MoireSave - Monochrome users also get a screen saver...
  70. o DMJ GIF - Produces exceptional quality images from high-resolution GIFs.
  71.   Lots of extra features, too.
  72. o Sound Lab - A complete sample editing package, with perhaps the fastest
  73.   edit functions available.
  74. p Spc-3375 - The *BEST* Spectrum viewer.  Slows down Mega STe's, flickers
  75.   STe pix for regular ST's, and even attempts to fix out-of-sync ST's!
  76. o Spc Thumb - Make catalog pictures of your entire collection!  Lots of
  77.   features, easy to use, and FAST.

  79. And don't forget to check out ReNameIt!, which allows you to rename files,
  80. folders, and volume labels, using upper case, lower case, or extended
  81. characters.

  99. Ya know, it's REALLY embarassing to release a program that has a major glitch
  100. in it.  MHz's problem was that it installed JUST FINE when run from the
  101. Desktop--which is where I tested it.  But it wouldn't install properly when run
  102. from the AUTO folder.  This glitch has been totally, completely, and absolutely
  103. removed; this time I TESTED it.  I guess that's what happens when you try to
  104. write a program two days before going on vacation.

  106. (Techie note: MHz was trying to install itself on the first VBL slot, which TOS
  107. reserves for various housekeeping chores.  From the AUTO folder, this slot
  108. wasn't used, so MHz filled in there.  When the Desktop initialized, it
  109. clobbered MHz's slot.  When run from the Desktop, though, the slot was already
  110. used, so MHz filled in the next available one.)
